Dear Jessica Brennan,

Why do we have telemarketers?

What is the worst job people can think of?  I will give you a hint.  What do people say when they can’t find a job? “The only jobs out there are for”… what?….Telemarketers, that’s correct. Now, if you’re a telemarketer please don’t take this personally. I have spoken with many nice telephone customer service representatives. But…

What is the worst thing people can think of happening during dinner? I’ll give you a hint, ring ring, “Hi is that J-Jes-Jessica Breen-brenman?”

Dear Jessica, I know that for a time you too worked in a call centre, and I know that every day you cried all the way to work and all the way home.

A few years ago I put Dad and I on the “Do Not Call” list. I think that’s just some government agency’s way of having a laugh because never have I had more calls.  When I tell the caller I’m on the Do Not Call list, (if it IS a caller and not a bot just calling my phone for the fun of hearing it ring), some beleaguered soul says, “That doesn’t apply to us”, in a tone that tells me he or she is doing the equivalent of ducking, as they await my reply.

I’ve had some very rude telemarketers and some very pushy telemarketers, and I imagine in their day-to-day lives they are likely not rude or pushy.  I have also been rude to telemarketers myself, and I have hung up on a few human beings who have called. We have dehumanized our connection and become people we don’t really recognize when we are dealing with each other during these encounters, and so I think it’s time to admit that it’s had its day. Telemarketing is bad for us.

If people don’t like being telemarketers and people hate getting calls from telemarketers, why on earth do we insist on having telemarketers?

Come up with a better plan people, the whole planet is over it!

Love Mum xo
