Dear Jessica Brennan,

If I go to the store to buy you a gift, come home, wrap it up, and put a bow on it, I’m excited. I get to give you something you will love or need. Something that is good for you. The last thing on my mind is worrying that when I hand it to you, you will say, “No, thank you, I don’t want it because….”

  • I’m too afraid to see what’s inside
  • I don’t deserve it
  • I can’t risk breaking it
  • I might have to change how I do things to make it work
  • I might not know everything about how to use it
  • I don’t trust you to give me the right gift
  • I don’t like what it’s wrapped in
  • I might lose it
  • I might not use it responsibly, so I shouldn’t have it
  • My friends might not like me anymore because this gift is too nice
  • I can’t be bothered opening it
  • It’s perfect, but not really for me
  • It wouldn’t be responsible for me to accept this gift that I have not yet test driven
  • The timing is wrong for me to receive a gift

There is always some risk that comes with opening a gift, but come on. We don’t say no to presents!

What about when life gets excited about handing us a gift, an opportunity or a challenge, all wrapped up and chosen just for us? What then? Let the excuses begin! (See above).

Why do we do that?

Say yes to life. Trust that the gifts are there for a reason. Get giddy.

Love,

Mum xo

PS – Often (usually) when I write to you, I’m also writing to myself. This post is definitely in that category.
