Dear Jessica Brennan,
Humans are funny little creatures. Often we think that the answer to too much of something, is more of that same thing. Think about that.
I’m stuffed from my turkey dinner, so I think I’ll have a big piece of pumpkin pie. My wife says she feels smothered and needs some space, so I monopolize her every moment. My business is losing money left right and centre, so I try to fix it by throwing more money at it. I know I can only have two drinks without having a hangover but I’m on my fourth glass of wine.
The answer to “too much” isn’t more.
The answer to too much food, isn’t more to eat. The answer to too much controlling behaviour, isn’t more attempts to control. The answer to losing too much money isn’t to lose more. The answer to too much alcohol, isn’t more alcohol.
I don’t know why we have a tendency to be this way, but the greatest and most horrible example of this in our current society is, that the answer to too much hate isn’t more hate. Yet, more hate is what we are getting. The answer to too much divisive behaviour isn’t more division, yet that’s what’s happening. The answer to too much finger pointing isn’t more blame. The answer to too much shirking of responsibility isn’t more excuses, it is owning it.
We are in an interesting time, and one thing I know for sure, is that the answer to too much confusion isn’t a tsunami of disillusionment, it is a river of understanding. We must choose creation or destruction. The answer to too much mistrust isn’t more filthy lies, it is more truth. The answer to so much lack of light and joy isn’t a deluge of examples of darkness, it is an explosion of wonder.
Love,
Mum xo
