Dear Jessica Brennan,

It is easy to be manipulated by the media, and by people who are good at turning tales around for their own advantage.  This card-trick and illusion that allows actions the luxury of not having to align with words, is being honed more and more in our time, so I thought I would give you some things to think about as you walk your daily path.

While those with a gift for the “spin” can make anything sound legitimate, there’s a big difference between things like:

Talking about truth and being truthful.

Seeing what’s evil and being evil.

Being able to understand, being understanding and being understood

Pointing out what’s wrong and admitting wrongdoing.

Knowing what’s good, and being good.

Being a disciplinarian, and being disciplined.

Defending and being defensive.

Being a parent and parenting.

Being in control, and being controlling or controlled.

The knowledge of these subtle differences that are used to skew our thoughts and position on any given subject or product daily, should be filed away for when we come across situations that make us feel like we’re being handled, and we should also be careful that by osmosis, we ourselves are not slowly learning to use these tactics on others.

A lot of self-serving people talk a big game about doing what’s right. Talking and doing are not even close to the same thing. Watch as well as listen.

Before you speak with authority, make sure that if you are using the coolest colloquialisms and the newest leanings and inclinations, they are what you actually know to be true, and are indeed indicative of what you are trying to say. Make sure your actions can back up your words. If not, you will quickly learn there is a vast difference between having a belief and being believable.

Love, Mum xo
