Dear Jessica Brennan,

A few days ago, I was lying on the massage bed, being tortured by my amazing therapist. She was having a small rant about complainers, which was funny because she was complaining. But I had to agree with her particular annoyance. She talked about the entitled among us who believe that the world owes them something.

We talked (She talked. I was too busy silently screaming in pain) about a variety of scenarios she had experienced recently. As we got to the root of her annoyance (and the root of my trigger point), she said, “I guess I get upset with people who don’t want to participate in life. You can’t just be dormant. Participation is required.”

I love those words. You have to participate to have a good life. You must work on something, create something – whether love, wealth, art or meals – it doesn’t matter what. You must commit to things, interact with people and contribute to society. The absolute joy in life comes from participation, which enhances your journey. Participate in the hard work, kindness, risk, rewards, lessons and setbacks.

You can’t just wait for someone or something to save you because that someone isn’t coming. You have to show up for the world and for yourself.

Participation is action, and action brings a full life.

Love,

Mum xo
