Dear Jessica Brennan,

We should all be ashamed of ourselves.

Regardless of what side of the Hillary and Donald fence we land on, we all need to do better than this.

CTV, BBC, CNN, FOX, NBC, ABC, CBC – it seems if you identify yourself with 3 letters, you’re in there sowing venomous seeds, vying for the attention of the viewing public – us. We who appear to be so porous that we will absorb any amount of contamination thrown at us, and then beg for more. Wake up.

In Canada we are in this nightmare, even though it isn’t our election.  In fact the whole world is now living this nightmare, this spectacle of reeking, backbiting vomitus.

By day and on our social media profiles we paint pictures of our ideal lives, filled with love and harmony, kittens and motivational quotes, yet really we are greedily, feeding on the poison coming from the circus of this vicious election.

We talk piously about living authentic lives, yet salivate over every single odious, fabricated piece of dirt that suits our own personal view, waiting with anticipation for the next disgusting morsel to fall, busily parroting the spin a speech writer or ad company has designed just for us.

We go on and on about our need for connection, kindness and community, but willingly dive into these two political camps that are shattering basic human dignities, and for what? To be right? To win? Who do we actually  think is going to win at the end of the day this time? No one.

We promote peace and yet fan the flames of this hateful war on society, on decency and on our own psyche, watching it all like a fiery crash over and over again. Wake up.

Every nasty detail, every accusation and denial leaves me now sick to my stomach. This is a rancid, putrid way to spend time, to spend our lives, and the least presidential of any campaign in my lifetime.

The slogan “Together” that Hillary is using is not exactly a clear representation of what’s going on, and Donald’s, “Make America Great Again,” – really, this is you on your best behaviour? “Fill America with Hate Again” – is a more suitable handle.  Personally, I don’t like either one of you anymore.

Far bigger than the two candidates is us. The mass feeding-frenzy public that can’t wait for the next fetid tweet, the next wicked-leak, the next broken woman to come forward, the next filthy insult and egregious exposure of something we don’t need to know, to cleverly mask the things that we do need to know.  You remember right? The things that mattered before so-called leaders turned into spoiled seventh graders? Things like policies on the sick, the poor, the rich, the arts, immigration, energy, economy, our mother earth.

But instead we are in these spiraling gladiator games eating up all the deception that’s being fed us, savoring every bite and asking for seconds. Wake up.

Dear Jessica Brennan, in this shameless show of repugnant behaviour, I feel ashamed. Shame, every time I look. We should all be ashamed of ourselves.

Love Mum xo
