Dear Jessica Brennan

Do you ever get tired of information? I love learning so I am an obsessive, gluttonous information consumer, but even I’ve had enough, at least for a while.

Do you know that according to our friend the internet, you can do just about anything in ten steps or less?  From training a dog to dealing with fainting spells to detecting counterfeit money – you can navigate it in less than ten steps and less than ten minutes. What happened to getting in your ten thousand hours?  Already bygone days.

As a person who has trouble crawling out of her head and into the real world at the best of times, the information era is a buffet of junk food for my brain, and my brain for one, now needs to go on a diet. Internet Addiction Disorder is a real thing, and more and more of us are in a state of denial.

There are times when I find myself searching topics I don’t even care about, or looking up and re-looking up things, just to get the answer I want. Sometime I look down at my phone and look up 45 minutes later with that time being lost forever, to nothing of any consequence.

I wonder if we will lie on our death beds wishing we had seen just one more video of a terrorist incident, or read one more article on weight loss. “Oh I wish I just had time to google one more bit of Trump news”.

I am now finding it all very draining. What used to make me feel knowledgeable now just makes me feel heavy, bored and boring.  I want to go outside, get my hands dirty, talk to my friends instead of just reading about them, and live my beautifully flawed life.

It’s tech fast time for me.

Love Mum
