Dear Jessica Brennan,

When I wake up at night, I’m trying to stop the anxious thoughts that arise. I shift to what’s in the room. The fan is blowing across my legs. A car creeps by outside. A dog barks in the distance. Why is a dog out at this time of night?

What is happening here right now as I type? It’s quiet. The John Cleese clock is ticking. His feet are over his head. It makes me smile. I can smell the yeast from the bread I’m making. This recipe takes 18 hours to rise. It’s Sunday, and it has been raining all day, but finally, the sun shines.

I can hear Dad’s breathing as he takes a nap. Jinx purrs while Dad breathes. The slow life or slow living movement gives you time to notice the present moment. The only real thing you have of any value.

Love,
Mum xo
