Dear Jessica Brennan,
I don’t really like neckties. It’s actually not that I don’t like them, I just am over them. How many decades in a row is this the accessory that men are going to have to wear? Dad doesn’t ever look very comfortable in a tie. To be fair, maybe Dad just isn’t very comfortable in places where you have to wear a tie. Also, he never has the right width. We just get the skinny one sorted and it’s wide time again, then something in between – patterned, solid, white. We can’t keep up, and truth be told, we don’t like them anyway. I hate white ties, for the record.
Then there are those dosey ties that people wear with their company logo splashed across, or maybe a dancing reindeer or something. That’s not a good life choice for anyone. I think too it’s the lack of fashion options that upsets me most about ties. I mean really, this is all men get for a night out: “Which tie are you wearing George, the one with the logo or the one with the reindeer?” If it’s a really splashy night they get to wear a tuxedo and a bow tie – ooooh, big deal. Men need more options to express themselves and I think this begins with a ten-year ban on the suit and tie. I totally would go back to the ruffled poet’s shirt and velvet waistcoat days. You?
Love Mum,
xo
Interesting that you should post this today, because just last night I attended an interesting fashion show entitled, “Redefining Masculinity”, a project of the Fashion Department at Ryerson. Travis was a participant. Not sure I can post a link here to his interview, but what he said echoed your sentiments exactly, except about ties. He kind of likes ties. http://www.jeaninebrito.com/masculinity/travis/
I love this! Why not? So much better than two choices – denim or khaki. People should be allowed to express themselves. Thank you for sharing this!
