Dear Jessica Brennan,
Thursday afternoon, the 4th of January:
In approximately 40 hours I am going to start a low-carb lifestyle. Saturday, Dad and I embark on the new carb-reduced frontier. I can do this. I’m assuming the induction period – the first 2 weeks – will be the most brutal part of the whole thing. No sugar, no carbs – basically meat and vegetables and that’s it. It’s okay. I’ve got this. I like meat and vegetables. I’m psyched. Easy-peasy (but no lemon squeezy).
Here we go.
Friday afternoon, the 5th of January:
I’ve just realized that I need to eat all of the Christmas candy and drink all the wine in the house before tomorrow morning. I think we should likely order Chinese food tonight too. Send ourselves out with a bang! We have about 4 bowls of candy, one tub of jelly beans and 30 bottles of wine. It’s going to be an interesting night.
Saturday morning, the 6th of January:
I didn’t sleep very well last night, and I have a headache this morning. There must have been MSG in the Chinese Food. I can’t find Dad. Wow, look at all the bottles and candy wrappers! In any case, let the carb reduction begin!
Saturday afternoon, the 6th of January:
I could murder a chocolate bar and a Coke. I haven’t actually had a chocolate bar or a Coke in about 8 years but for some reason I really want it today.
Sunday, the 7th of January:
Dad is complaining already about the missing carbs. I caught him licking his headphones.
Monday morning, the 8th of January:
This is actually pretty easy. Keep busy and you won’t notice.
Monday lunchtime, the 8th of January:
Hmm – it’s pizza day at work. Stay strong and eat your broccoli and turkey. That pizza looks amazing. Does it always smell like that?
Tuesday the 9th of January:
I feel faint. All these vegetables can’t be good for me. I need sugar. I have a cold. I think I’m dying. A day seems like a month.
One month later – Wednesday the 10th of January:
I haven’t lost an ounce. My cold is worse. The only thing that can save me is pasta. This is life or death.
Thursday the 11th of January:
I feel a little better. That pasta really did the trick.
Summary:
I wonder if I went on a all-carb diet if I would miss eating meat and vegetables? I bet I would. Hey, maybe moderation is the key after all.
Love Mum xo
