Dear Jessica Brennan,

We hear a lot about the environment and how it is our responsibility to be better citizens of the planet. This of course makes perfect sense as human beings.

The plastic in the ocean, the air we breathe, the destruction of the rain forest; these are all things we would do well to pay greater attention to, but not for the sake of Mother Earth. For the sake of ourselves.

Species will be extinct, toxins will kill us off if we don’t kill each other first, but Mother Earth isn’t really bothered.  Being sensible, she puts on her own oxygen mask before assisting the person sitting next to her, and in the end she will be fine.  She has the power to reinvent herself multiple times after we’re long gone. In fact it would be easier for her if we would just leave.  We are the house guest that has long outstayed their welcome. We are the aberration.

When we say that we are interested in saving the planet, what we really mean is we are interested in saving ourselves. It is the human race that is in jeopardy not planet earth.

So the next time you see earth-friendly, eco-friendly or green, think human-friendly or Jessica and Mum friendly, perhaps that will give us all a little more incentive to take a closer look at what we’re doing to the environment and ourselves.

Our planet should not be confused with some weak target that will sit quietly by and be abused beyond her ability to resuscitate herself. When she fights back it may very well be with a force that is surprisingly swift and permanent for human beings. She’s not our mother, she’s the earth mother, and every mum knows how they would exact justice if their child was carelessly, selfishly and maliciously abused.

Hell hath no fury.

Love,

Mum xo
