Dear Jessica Brennan,

Some people are available, sensitive, always ready to listen and offer comfort when things go wrong. When a friend needs to be heard or understood, they are unquestionably there with unlimited support in a magnitude that is rare. 

But, I think it is essential to realize that this same person full of kindness and grace can be deeply wounded when, as soon as the sun shines again, the needy people repay their open warmth with selfishness and insensitivity. 

Our rare comfort-givers receive pain that is proportionate to the magnitude of the empathy they give.
